Nine Patch: Very Varied Values

Lynn Roddy Brown

I started with a large stack of Nine Patch blocks.  As I put them on the wall, one block seemed to glow and create a three dimensional effect.  I realized that this block was made using clear light colors.  I searched through my stack looking for similar blocks.  I found very few.  In the end because I was so very carefully placing values, I only used about ten of the trade blocks.  I felt the trade was well worth the effort because of what I had learned.

The top was together with green setting triangles for about five years before I found a border that made me happy.  When I started making this quilt I had no idea how to make a dogtooth border.  Sometimes a quit just has to wait for the right border to come along.  I don't feel bad about this as long as I am finishing other quilts.

This quilt hung in the International Quilt Festival in 2004.
