For the quilt I used 9" blocks. There are actually two blocks. The second block is the same as the block shown but all of the values are reversed. For 9" blocks the half-square triangle units should be an unfinished size of 3 1/2". I make these by pairing two 4 1/4" squares. I spray the squares with starch, place them right sides together and press. This should make the squares stick together. I find starch works much better than Magic Sizing. I cut the paired squares on the diagonal, sew the bias edge and then trim them to an accurate 3 1/2". The rail units are made using 1 1/2" x 3 1/2" strips or you can sew 1 1/2" strips into strip sets and then cross cut 3 1/2" units. The centers are cut 3 1/2". A sample of the block is given below.
